Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need hearing protection?

A good “rule of thumb” for determining if your work area or activity requires hearing protection is as follows. If you have difficulty hearing or understanding a “normal” tone of voice at a distance of about three feet (90 centimeter), noise levels are probably exceeding safe levels and you should be using hearing protection. Many activities and tools require the use of hearing protection. This includes, but is not limited to, lawn mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, weed trimmers, chain saws, concrete saws, concrete/hammer drills, snow blowers, power saws, working near running chillers, etc. Firearm uses ALWAYS requires hearing protection.

Event Average dB Max. exposure time
Gun shot, gun shot 124 – 161 0! Treshold of pain
Concerts / festivals 115 < 30 seconds
Sporting event 114 < 45 seconds
iPod, MP3 players 112 < 1 minute
Jackhammer, chainsaw 109 2 minutes
Motor Cycle 98 22 minutes
Aerobic class 94 < 1 hour
Subway 93 < 1,5 hour
Heavy traffic 85 8 hours
Vacuum cleaner, busy street, alarm clock 80 > 8 hours

What is the difference between the filters?

For all kind of uses we have created products with special filters for you. The average attenuation (damping), is mentioned on the packaging.

“15dB” filters reduce  the sound level by 15dB making it safe for 8 hours continuous use in any environment up to 100dB. To compare: 100dB can cause hearing damage after being exposed for 15 minutes!

“20dB” filters reduce  the sound level by 20dB making it safe for 8 hours continuous use in any environment up to 105dB. To compare: 105dB can cause hearing damage after being exposed for 4 minutes!

“25dB” filters reduce  the sound level by 25dB making it safe for 8 hours continuous use in any environment up to 110dB. To compare: 110dB can cause hearing damage after being exposed for less than 2 minutes!

Another difference is the attenuation over the frequency’s. Our regular filters give you already a very nice performance ensuring clarity of sound with full sound dynamic. But the flat attenuating filters are simply the best! An easy way to recognize them; all the 49,95 Euro solutions in our webstore contain flat attenuating filters.

I am a musician/DJ, which solution is best for me?

The Pro series is definitely best for you : Ambient 10, Acoustic 15, Amplified 20 or Fcking Loud 25 depending on desired attenuation and situation of use. Please note the difference in attenuation (Ambient ±10dB, Acoustic ±15dB, Amplified ±20dB, Fcking Loud ±25dB).

How do I properly fit my Crescendo earplugs?

Please have a look at our Crescendo Fitting Instructions video.

I work in construction, which solution is best for me?

For noisy workplaces the “Industry (-20dB)”, Heavy Industry (-25dB), PPE 20 (-20dB), and PPE 25 (-25dB) are the most suitable solutions. Please note the difference in attenuating. The PPE versions contain special flat attenuating filters, protecting your hearing whilst allowing you to still be able to communicate, hear alarms and keeping spatial awareness.

I lost an ear tip, how can I obtain a new one?

Ear tips in different kind of colours and sizes can be bought from our online store from the accessories section.

I lost a filter, how can I obtain a new one?

Please contact Dynamic Ear Company BV.

I bought Crescendo, but the supplied ear plugs do not fit

In the packaging we supply two sizes of ear plugs that fit most people (Medium and Large). If the supplied ear plugs do not fit we will provide you a set of Small or X-Large tips for free!

Just mail your address details, which product you have purchased and a copy of your receipt to sales(at)crescendo-hearingprotection.com.

Please do not forget to swap the filters to the set of ear plugs that you are going to use.

Why is the SNR figure on the back of the crescendo packaging different than the damping figure on the front?

The SNR value is the minimum guaranteed damping according to the official certification data EN352.2 figure (if worn properly) whilst the 20dB is the average damping the product provides.

Can I clean crescendo hearing protection?

The ear tips and filters are fully washable. For cleaning the filter, use warm water only. The ear tips may be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap. Please read the instruction manual carefully how to insert the filters back into the ear tip.

How does the Crescendo 'Sleep' work?

The normal sound level of the bedroom is typically 40 dB this means that any sounds become extremely intrusive. Although the sleeping plug must reduce snoring to acceptable levels we must also consider all other noises which cover the whole human hearing frequency range (typically up to 20 kHz in a young person).

A true sleeping plug must provide a hearing attenuator that is;

1. Comfortable to wear for a period 6-10 hours
Air into ear to reduce heating and irritation
soft so that the person can sleep on their size
flexible to reduce compression of arteries in the ear – causing the user to hear their heart beat

2. Reduce all noises typically heard when trying to sleep, in particular for the traveller where other sounds are also heard
Babies crying or screaming 2.5 to 3kHz @ 115 – 130dB
Snoring 40-90dB (loudest) @ 137Hz, 1.25kHz and resonant frequencies to 7kHz. Average noise level 70-75dB
Traffic – road noise, engine noise, horns, refuse collection etc 90-110dB
Aircraft
Rain, storms, thunder upto 130dB
Alarms, cars, fire etc
Clubs, bars, revellers shouting, music
air conditioning 60dB @ 200Hz typical

3. Allows the morning call or alarm clock to be heard.
Typical alarm from clock or phone 80dB @ 800 to 2kHz

It can therefore be seen that some of these sounds are in conflict with each other. The Crescendo Sleep uses technology to not only filter sounds but also to allow air to enter the ear. This allows the ear to remain cool and avoid ‘heating’ or ‘hot ear’. The medical grade TPE material is designed for comfort and hygiene, both the tip and filter are washable to reduce the risk of infection which happens when hearing protection is worn for long periods of time.
The Crescendo Sleep meets the requirements found in paragraph 1.

Snoring is typically 70 to 75 dB although a loud snorer can reach levels of 90 dB, the typical frequency range of the snore has 2 fundamental frequency at 137 Hz and 1.25 kHz, encroaching on the region in which human hearing is most sensitive (2-3 kHz). The DEC Sleep attenuates by 20 to 24 dB though out this range bringing a typical snore sound level to 50 dB, just above the level of a typical room. Consideration must be given to the alarm clock which is only just louder then a typical snore and at some of the same frequencies. The Crescendo Sleep ensures that the alarm can still be heard a sit is 5 dB + higher (more than twice the power of the attenuated snore).

the Crescendo Sleep reduces all other sounds by 23 to 30 dB, depending upon the frequency, bringing them down to unobtrusive or comfortable levels so that they have minimal effect on the sleeper.

If you are not entirely satisfied with the Crescendo Sleep, we can also offer a full block filter however this would not be as comfortable when worn for long periods due to no air entering the ear, the same problem found with other total block type solutions such as foam, malleable wax etc. These products totally block the ear causing it to ‘heat’ and irritate during the night.

The switch of my Shooting multimode filter came off. What do I do?

The rocker switch is designed to be operated by pushing it to open or close mode. Do not try to remove the multimode filter out off the earplug by pulling the rocker switch because when you do, the switch will come off and the filter looses it’s full block functionality.

This doesn’t mean it is broken, because the switch has been especially designed to stay fully intact after it comes off.  You can place the rocker switch back on to the filter yourself.

What’s the correct way to use Crescendo Fly to ensure comfort during use?

The Fly earplugs come with filters that contain a membrane that provides slow changes in pressure; hence the pain often encountered during take off and landing is reduced (when the earplugs are inserted correct). Fit the earplugs prior to take off. The preferred method is to keep the plugs in the ears for the duration of the flight, this will reduce the background noise such as air conditioning, engine noise whilst allowing voice through. You probably experience that understanding conversation is easier. The Crescendo earplugs are made from medical grade TPE (unlike competitor products made from silicone) and have been independently tested for comfort during 12 hours continuous use.
